I need a very firm mattress for my injured back. Will it work to put firm mattress on a solid wood platform?
I injured my back more than 20 years ago and arthritis is developing in it causing more pain. Right now I sleep in a recliner because the Serta Posturepedic Set I purchased a few years ago gives me back pain every morning. I am planning on buying a good Sealy Mattress during a current close out sale and I wonder if it will be more firm if it’s not on a box spring.
I don’t want to change the total height of the surface I sleep on very far either and definitely not make it any taller. I have nice drawers under my mattress and box springs and it is the perfect height to stand beside the bed for sexual intercourse which is great for my back in that position.
I have other convenient furniture for other positions that won’t hurt my back also.

The new box springs that they make now have sheets of plywood on the top. It’s very solid.
If you buy a mattress and base you will be guaranteed that it is the best bed and will do its job. You do not have to put anything underneath the top mattress. If you already have a bed and are just buying a new mattress then make sure that the mattress is going to sit on hardwood, not softwood.
Over time softwood will bend but hardwood won’t. Also, the mattress manufacturer will probably void your warranty on the mattress if you don’t have a hardwood bed. Check and ask them.
I recently bought a King Coil chiropractic mattress and base because I have a bad back too and I am so glad that I did. It is a great mattress.
One tip for you. When you go mattress shopping, you have to lie on the mattress in the position you normally sleep in for 20 – 30 minutes. If you don’t feel like you have to roll over in that time then you know you have found the right mattress.
Take your time and buy the right mattress first off. It will be worth it in the long run and you don’t want to be stuck with a mattress that you hate after a month or so because more than likely you won’t be able to return it.
Also, don’t get sucked in by all those zone things if you are buying an inner coil mattress. 3 zones is plenty, you don’t need 5 and you don’t need 7 or whatever they are trying to sell you. The individual springs are always way better than the big steel ones that are all connected together.
I also found that I could not stand to lie on a mattress that had one of those topper things. Sure they are soft but you just can’t get out of them. I literally had to roll out of one of the beds I tried that had a mattress topper. It was so uncomfortable, especially if you have a bad back. More than anything you need support, not to sink into anything.
Happy shopping and good luck!
