We recently purchased a used mattress and box spring. How do we get the smell of stale tobacco out of it?
We tried spraying it with a deodorizer, but maybe we didn’t try the right one. We currently have baking soda on it, but it doesn’t seem to be working. Perhaps we haven’t given it enough time to work. In the next week,the mattress will not be used, affording us the opportunity to try various remedies.
To those who choose not to answer the question but to heap scorn on me for purchasing a used mattress, I offer this: When you stay in a hotel, do you insist upon a new mattress?

i would try cleaning it with a upholstery clearner,,, spray it on, rub it in, or also, you said you have baking soda on it, you might try mixing up some baking soda and water, then taking a wash cloth and washing it (scrubbing ) it down,, let it dry,,,, then use vacuum hose to remove residue , another idea is lysol spray, that usually kills most any odors
You should never have bought a used mattress, this is very unhealthy. I hope it was steamed. apparently it wasn’t or it wouldn’t stink. That’s about the only way your going to get it cleaned, by steaming. It’s probably full of dead skin, and dust mites, there the ones the make a mattress small they exude an odor through there excrement. Sorry but, that’s the ticket.
Why on earth anyone would buy a used mattress is beyond me….try setting it outside for a week and let it air out…fabreze also does well…next time buy a NEW one.
Really, that’s gross. This is a question I’d expect to read in a third world newspaper. You have no idea what could be embedded in that thing. The fact that after everything you’ve tried and it still smells IS A CLUE not to sleep on it!
I doubt you can get the smell out. Its just like a hotel bed in a smokers room…NASTY. The smell is always there.
I doubt you will get rid of the smell. If money is an issue thus causing you to buy a used mattress, and thus not being able to now replace it, perhaps buy or make a mattress cover that encloses the whole mattress like a giant pillow slip. Use a high count fabric – that will help hold in the smell and place Bounce sheets inside with the mattress. Good luck.
Baking soda. sprinkled liberally over the whole thing and left alone for 24 hours! Then vacuum it afterwards. good luck.

Steam cleaning, a long time drying and airing out and follow with Odo Ban . You can buy it at Wal Mart. It kills most germs and smells great.
Enjoy your new mattress.Make sure to use a mattress pad.
Febreeze fabric freshener. also if u can,put it outside on a porch or somewhere outdoorsy to let it breathe,and get circulation through the entire mattress.
The best thing to use is Vinegar and water. Make sure no matter what you use that it is completely dried before making the bed, or you will have a musty smell from moisture.
