The Simmons Beautyrest is known for "having less motion from one side of the mattress to the other". The pocketed coil AKA Marshall Coil (1920′s) was designed to be less noisey, but was made popular by the T.V. commercial in the early 90′s showing a bowling ball falling on their mattress without disturbing the set of bowling pins. On the other hand, the main complaint about the Beautyrest has been "the springs are non-tempered Steel" which as compared to tempered. The example usually given is tempered steel is like a "safety pin" and non-tempered is like "paper clip". This gets the idea across, but I feel is a little unfair. I believe Simmons Beautyrest Exceptionale Series with the cable coil is Simmon’s answer to that argument. It does depend on your current budget, which these are usally a great mattress for the price.
If budget is not as important as getting the therapy you desire then considered this. They still "miss the boat" for support. They, like almost all mattresses compromise comfort for support, or support for comfort. This is due to the fact, that it separates the material(steel springs) used for support and the material(various foams) used for comfort. The pressure relief(comfort) and spinal alignment(support) is most important when it’s the same material. Tempurpedic sometimes gets credit for popularizing this concept, unfortunatley they also "miss the boat". Generally speaking, it relies mostly on surface contact.
So now what?……

I’m glaaad you asked that question Ev. Beautyrest® Pocketed Coil® springs separate a good night’s sleep from a great night’s sleep. Strong and durable, the springs are individually wrapped and conform to the unique shape of your body. When you toss and turn, the Pocketed Coil® springs go to work, softening and cushioning your body at every turn, so you sleep peacefully and undisturbed.
Funny, I just spoke with my orthopaedic therapist about this yesterday. She recommended them, but with a firm bedtop (memory foam) – she says they are great and they last forever. I am currently having back problems so I was very interested.
