Can a sleep number airbed be put on a slat foundation or does it need a flat base?
I bought just the top part of a sleep number bed and I want to avoid buying the $400 base that Select Comfort sells. I want to get a head board/foot board, but they all seem to come with slats as a foundation for a box spring. Has anyone had luck putting a sleep number bed on a slat base?
My spouse and I have had a sleep number bed for a few years, and only bought the mattress, as well. We have had it on a regular box spring, with no ill effect. However, we found that when sitting on the edge, over time the rigid foam around the outside lining became broken down. We have just commissioned a custom platform to be made along the design of a waterbed frame, with a lip running around the edges for support of the mattress, as it has bowed out on the sides. Also, when we decided to go back and price the base, the cost had jumped substantially.
I will also add, after years in a waterbed, the sleep number method is definitely the way to go for bad backs!
As long as it has a flat surface to inflate on you should be OK. If your box springs are in good shape and has good even support I would not get the plastic base SC sells. If you didn’t have a good base I’d say get one from SC because they are good and easy to take apart for moving etc. but with a good box spring you should be good to go.
By the way, it’s the best mattress my back has ever had.
