What is a recommended mattress type for someone who is prone to getting down in her back? Bulging discs, etc.
In the past, I have found that the harder the mattress, the less likely I am to wake up in pain. Currently have a Sealy Posturepedic Premium mattress…the hardest I could find. But now it is approaching time to change it, and I know a lot has been invented since I last purchased. I wonder about Memory Foam. Never tried a water bed. May be other options I need to consider that would give optimum comfort. Generally, the least amont of sagging in a mattress….at the first sign of wear…I start waking in pain that lasts the entire day or longer….and escalates into not being able to stand straight. Any ideas? What have orthopedic doctors recommended? What experience have any of you had with various types…those of you who have backs that are weak like mine.

Lisa J is right, a Tempurpedic bed may be the answer (it’s a memory foam bed).
Some Tempurpedic beds are softer but some are firmer. Memory foam is generally considered to be a soft foam in the sense that it doesn’t have enough support on its own.
However, on top of a firm mattress core it can be firm enough if it’s the high density type, if it’s thick enough, if it has a firmness rating of about 15-16 and more importantly, if it’s the temperature type.
Tempurpedic mattresses, but not all memory foam brands, soften just around your body to allow better contouring but deeper down it remains cooler and firmer.
Don’t buy a waterbed, it’s not firm nor supportive enough despite its body contouring abilities.

Have I got the bed for you! Oh,and I don’t sell them really. I broke my back a few years ago and I got a tempurpedic bed, sorry not sure how it’s spelled. I went above and beyond and got the one that can elevate your head and/or feet, but you don’t have to get that. I would give up food before I gave up this mattress. Good luck!
